Its a 1500hp racing engine used by Toyota. Also known as the 503E. And what was the point coming here and saying that stuff...?

how come that racing engine has an oil filter? all the race car engines i know leave that off so the oil can flow more free, and since the engine is rebuilt after every race, the filter is not necessary.

Is that a master cylinder? J/K He's right about the oil filter, though. What's up with that? Any links for cars that use this engine?

a racing engine...and esp. a 1500 hp racing engine would have a pretty considerable oil pump...of which is missing.

its definately not a 2 stroke, u can see valve covers, valve cam gears, and an oil cap, and an oil filter. none of those are found on a gasoline powered stroke. plus it doesnt have the expansion chamber exhaust which is one of the easiest ways to gain HP on a 2stroke engine.

i also go with monte carlo, im calling bullshit on the 1500 hp claim, unless its packing way more displacement than it looks like (looks like less than 2000cc's), or they still need to add the nitrous, turbo and supercharger. hell a CART car only makes 900 hp with a turbo or supercharger, and they are over 2.5L and are a V-8 that revs to 15k rpm.

just curious too, what kind of race car would need 1500hp? thats about 2x what nascar has, almost twice what CART has, and about 25% of what top fuel dragsters use. and none of those engines have oil filters.

Toyota used it in GTCC/IMSA. "The most famous and successful Toyota Race engine- the 503E was used in Toyota's Triumphant Championship seasons in IMSA GTO / GTP, Pikes Peak, Le Mans, and in the mid-90s Japan Touring Cup Championship. It is important to note that the 16 valve cylinder head layout from the 152E engine and the T block crankshaft saddle design were used as design base for this ultimate Toyota 4 cylinder Turbocharged race engine. The 503E represented the most powerful 4 cylinders in competition history developing over 1000HP in qualifying tune, 800HP for sprint races, and 600 for endurance events. IMPRESSIVE."

I've spoken with a man who has worked on the 503E for Toyota (Stephen Gunter http://gunter.com.jm/ back on the old MR2 board before it was moved (new location www.mr2oc.com who said that during qualifying it was not unusual for these engines to be turning out around 1500HP. Of course there's no dyno information to support this (specs held secret by Toyota) but the HP can be derived by times and weight of the car.

In Forumula 1, it wasn't unusual in the mid 80's for those engines to be producing upwards of 1000hp. BMW succesfully campaigned with USED engines from the 2002 that were destroked to something like 1.3L with 18K redlines and 1300HP.

And what the HELL is your guys problems coming on here talking shit?! I don't even know you, nor have I done anything to provoke this. If you like your domestics, FINE! That's what YOU like. NO need to come on here and preach. I respect fast cars, jap/domestic/euro. MonteCarlo31, you mentioned you had a Buick that does 10's. That's cool as shit, congrats, it's just not my thing. And theres other types of racing besides dragging...if I started talking about road racing or anything where handling was important, you probably wouldn't care...that's how I feel about drag racing.

[EDIT] I just found some more pics in my collection of the 503E

this is the engine that were in the Gurney cars? If so, it is indeed pretty remarkable. Those were some awesome cars, however, they only produced 700-750hp due to air restrictors.

Also, i believe the original picture is still a pretty close to stock...and it's missing the huge turbo and wastegate.

I don't know much about Gurney so I wouldn't be able to tell you. These engines have been used in a multitude of racing applications, and I'm sure that in some sports, restrictors were used. Unhindered performance is around 1500HP though and that's what they used for qualification runs in F1. I was reading a statement from a pit crewman who was saying that Toyota changed the engines nearly every year, including the cast, to take into account what they learned prior which created somewhat of a headache when needing parts. You can actually buy one of these engines from the website Toysports for only $15k (haha) and I've seen the turbos for sale on ebay before (not that I'd want to put a turbo optimized for 12k+ RPMs on a car that redlines at 9k). Also, the 503 doesn't have a stock counterpart, Toyota only badged them 3SGT (not to be confused with the 3SGTE which is used in MR2 Turbos and Celica Altracs) to try to sneak the engine in under homologation rules for some of the races in which it participated.
