Can you say, gimmick character?

Since I'm feeling overjoyous, let me say that I hated, hated, hated Knightfall. I did, however, enjoy Prodigal Son, perhaps the only good story that came out of Batman's broken back.

My knowledge of comicbooks is limited, but I say Bane is one of the smartest villains Batman has faced. Why?

1. Using deductive reasoning, Bane found out Batman's identity.
3. Bane is a strategist. He released all the inmates of Arkham so Batman would wear himself out by catching them one by one. Like the situation with The Mick (inmate in Pena Duro), Bane took advantage of a weaken Batman and broke him.

*Sure... The breaking of batman was a gimmick, but it was still good reading.

Meh. Doomsday is neither here nor there.

My favorite villain in the DC Universe is probably Captain Cold and/or Mirror Master. I think that the Flash's rogue gallery is like, the X-men of villains. However, I like the villains more over in Marvel. Big fan of Doctor Doom.

It's not to say that Bane can't be a good villain.

Recently, during an SL in Gotham Knights, Bane was shown to be a -very- deep character who was morally ambiguous and, with that said, wanted a family. Yet, later on in Identity Crisis, he's shown as a minor, one-mind antagonist.

My point is this:

Bane is a gimmick character, but even gimmick character's can be used to tell a good story. What good came of Knightfall? One, we saw Azrael as Batman, and then, we saw Dick Grayson as Batman (which is just right). The story, by its own right, was okay; but I hated the book because the mantle wasn't handed over immediately to Dick Grayson, not because of its story elements, characterizations and so on.

Anyway... I am kind going through a Comicbook Renaissance. I am sure you have read Frank Miller's Dark Knight returns. How was it? Got any batman graphic novel recommendations?

The Dark Knight Returns is pretty good... but Frank Miller is a hack. I hate him and the ship he sailed in on. If you then read The Dark Knight Strikes Again, the sequel to DKR, you'll see what I'm talking about. Read them both anyways.

I would suggest picking up...

Year 1 by Frank Miller (which is pretty good)
Hush by Loeb
Face 2 Face by Robinson (current Detective Comics and Batman story arc)
Long Halloween by Loeb
Dark Victory by I forget
and... Bruce Wayne: Fugitive, Bruce Wayne: Murderer by I forget.
